We are seeking an experienced Payments Architect to design, lead, and deliver scalable, secure, and innovative payment solutions. This role requires deep expertise in card payments, modern payment technologies, and enterprise architecture, combined with the ability to work closely with business, product, and engineering teams to support large‑scale payment transformations.
The ideal candidate will play a key role in shaping payment strategy, defining target architecture, and ensuring successful integration across internal systems, external partners, and global payment networks.
Key Responsibilities
Payments Architecture & Design
- Design end‑to‑end payment architectures covering front‑end channels, middleware, backend platforms, and external payment partners
- Define target‑state architectures and roadmaps for acquiring, issuing, and digital payment capabilities
Technical Leadership
- Act as a subject matter expert for card payments, payment gateways, and scheme integrations
- Evaluate and recommend payment platforms, PSPs, orchestration layers, and fraud solutions
- Ensure designs align with non‑functional requirements including performance, resilience, scalability, and security
Integration & Delivery
- Lead integrations with banking systems, payment switches, HSMs, card schemes, and third‑party providers
- Provide architecture governance and design assurance throughout delivery lifecycles
- Support development teams with technical guidance, design reviews, and troubleshooting
Security & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with PCI‑DSS and secure payment processing standards
- Incorporate tokenization, encryption, key management, and fraud controls into solution designs
- Support audits, risk assessments, and regulatory engagements as required
Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with business stakeholders, product owners, and delivery leads to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Present architecture options, trade‑offs, and recommendations to senior leadership
- Support large‑scale payment modernization and transformation programs
Required Skills & Experience
Payments Domain Expertise
- Strong knowledge of card payments, including merchant acquiring, issuing, and payment gateways
- Familiarity with card schemes such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and JCB
- Solid understanding of transaction lifecycles, interchange, clearing & settlement, chargebacks, and disputes
Modern Payment Technologies
- Hands‑on experience with API‑first, microservices, and event‑driven architectures
- Knowledge of ISO 8583, ISO 20022, REST, SOAP, message queues, and orchestration tools
- Experience with modern PSPs and payment platforms such as Adyen, Stripe, Cybersource, or Braintree
Architecture & Documentation
- Proven ability to produce high‑quality solution blueprints, sequence diagrams, and technical documentation
- Experience designing highly available, fault‑tolerant payment systems
Cloud & DevOps
- Experience delivering payment workloads on Azure, AWS, or GCP
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and observability practices
Communication & Delivery
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
- Experience working in complex, enterprise‑scale delivery environments
