THE TEAM
We're a small Data Science team at THE ICONIC -- the largest online fashion retailer in AU/NZ. We build and ship real products end-to-end: LLM-based agents, multi-modal search, custom deep learning models at scale, and AI embedded directly into business workflows.
SCOPE OF ROLE
- You'll own ML projects end-to-end: designing custom models when the problem demands it, shipping pragmatic solutions when it doesn't, and knowing the difference
- Day-to-day, you'll work autonomously on real problems — predicting customer behaviour, improving search relevance, building AI agents that automate business workflows — and ship directly to production where your work impacts millions of customers
Recent team work includes:
- Deploying Google Gemini models into production for content generation and evaluation
- Building multi-modal search serving millions of queries
- Designing autonomous AI agents embedded in business workflows
- Training custom deep learning models and Bayesian systems on large-scale datasets
- Running generative AI for personalised recommendations
- You'll collaborate with our Sydney-based team, present technical solutions, and have the opportunity to mentor and shape best practices
What It Takes
- Fluent English (written and verbal) — you'll present solutions and collaborate across timezones
- Strong Python with solid software engineering practices (OOP, clean code, Git workflows)
- ML depth: classification, regression, feature engineering, evaluation, overfitting — the fundamentals done well
- Deep learning experience (PyTorch or TensorFlow) — including judgement on when custom architectures are warranted vs. off-the-shelf
- Production shipping: you've deployed, debugged, and maintained code in live environments
- Docker containers: building, running, troubleshooting
Ways to stand out from the crowd
- Experience building with LLMs (RAG pipelines, prompt engineering, agent architectures)
- Google Cloud deployment (Cloud Run, Vertex AI)
- CI/CD with GitHub Actions or similar
- A/B testing design and interpretation
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
