RHS Job Title Sales Associate/Barista Job Description

Location: 1855 Place and Library Starbucks.

Pay rate: $14.73 per hour

Looking for new hires who are interested in being hired and trained during the Spring 2026 semester, but must be returning to work for the Fall 2026 semester.

Sales Associates/Baristas are responsible for working together to be the best moment in every customer's day while delivering expertly crafted products.

You are expected to bring the Starbucks experience to life for our customers and each other- while proudly wearing the green apron.

  • Creates personalized experiences for customers by demonstrating knowledge of our coffee, products and offers
  • Proudly develops expertise in their craft while diligently maintaining equipment and the store in a fast paced environment
  • Contributes to the success of the team and supports others to do their best work

Job Duties Include

Be Committed to Customers

  • Follows our customer service commitment (smiling, offering a friendly greeting, learning customers names and orders, assuming the best in others, saying thank you) in each interaction
  • Actively seeks to recognize, include, appreciate, support and delight our customers
  • Uses operational tools (e.g., Beverage and Food cards, Now Brewing) and training to develop coffee/product knowledge and helps customers find their favorites
  • Connects customers with events and offers by staying informed about relevant information (Now Brewing, Weekly Update, training)
  • Accurately rings customer orders and follows proper cash handling procedures
  • Follows the LATTE model to restore the Starbucks Experience when things don't go as planned

  • Works in assigned positions and uses appropriate routines
  • Crafts and serves only the highest quality products
  • Continually hones their craft through learning and practice
  • Ensures food and merchandise is visually appealing, stocked and signed appropriately
  • Completes responsibilities on station cards and Clean Plays to keep the equipment and store environment clean, safe and ready for customers

Required Qualifications

  • Be enrolled as a student at Michigan State University (during academic year)
  • Demonstrated commitment to outstanding customer service
  • Must be able to complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision
  • Must be positive and respectful, especially when working with a diverse population
  • Be able to work nights, early mornings, and/or weekends for at least 12 hours a week

Preferred Qualifications

Previous certified barista, food handling and/or Cashier experience

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to move up to 10 pounds and stand for long periods of time

Work Hours

  • Be able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week- maximum of 40 hours for the summer/ 20 or 29 hours for the academic semesters. Earliest start time is 6:30am and latest end time is 9pm
  • Be able to work at least every other weekend
  • Able to work a consistent schedule
  • Weekends and later shifts past 5:00pm are possible depending on operational needs and special event.
