Role Overview

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Optical Solutions Business Unit at Coherent Vietnam is seeking an Optics Manufacturing Engineer to support the production transfer and ramp-up of aspheric lens manufacturing from the United States to Vietnam.

The wider Optical Solutions Business Unit focuses on the production of high-precision optical components and complex optical assemblies used in semiconductor capital equipment, industrial laser machining, and other advanced optics applications.

This specific role is focused on aspheric lens production for industrial laser machining applications. Production uses advanced optics fabrication and metrology technologies, including Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF), computer-controlled polishing, and precision optical measurement systems to achieve nanometer-scale accuracy.

This type of manufacturing is unique in Vietnam and differs significantly from traditional high-volume production. The environment is characterized by:

  • Low-volume, high-value products
  • Complex manufacturing processes with tight tolerances and demanding specifications
  • Advanced process-control and metrology requirements
  • Nanometer-level precision in optics manufacturing and measurement
  • Strong focus on yield, quality, on-time delivery, and continuous improvement

Vietnam is a strategic growth location for these advanced manufacturing capabilities. The successful candidate will play a key role in transferring leading edge optics manufacturing technology to Vietnam to support increasing global demand.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to spend several weeks in the United States for technical training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the production transfer and ramp-up of aspheric lens manufacturing from the United States to Vietnam.
  • Develop and update process procedures, work instructions, and training documents in Vietnamese, ensuring consistency with the original English documentation.
  • Train technicians and production teams on optic manufacturing processes, equipment operation, inspection methods, and quality requirements.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Improve yield, process capability, cycle time, efficiency, and overall manufacturing performance.
  • Support the development and improvement of inspection, testing, and process-control protocols.
  • Work closely with engineering, production, quality, maintenance, and global technical teams.
  • Support tooling, fixture, and process-equipment improvements for aspheric lens manufacturing.
  • Apply statistical process control, data analysis, and structured problem-solving methods to improve process stability.
  • Support customer quoting within established guidelines while challenging process capabilities to gain new business opportunities
  • Assist customer audits and iso certification.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, safety, and documentation requirements.
  • Stay current with emerging optics manufacturing technologies, precision polishing methods, metrology techniques, and process-control practices.
  • Promote a safe, disciplined, and continuous-improvement-oriented work environment.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or a related technical field.
  • Preferred majors include:
    • Optics Fabrication Engineering
    • Mechatronics Engineering
    • Manufacturing Engineering
    • Precision Engineering
    • Materials Science
    • Physics or Applied Physics
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a high-precision manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in optics manufacturing, precision polishing, grinding, lapping, glass processing, ceramics processing, precision machining, metrology, semiconductor equipment, or other high-tolerance manufacturing environments is preferred.
  • Experience with process optimization, yield improvement, statistical analysis, and quality methodologies.
  • Experience with tooling, fixtures, process documentation, and technician training is an advantage.
  • Experience with optical inspection, interferometry, profilometry, Magnetorheological Finishing, computer-controlled polishing, or precision metrology is a strong advantage but not mandatory.
Skills And Abilities

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to work hands-on in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, tolerances, and process requirements.
  • Strong willingness and ability to learn new technologies, especially advanced aspheric lens manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to unfamiliar technologies, high-precision processes, and demanding customer requirements.
  • Good understanding of process improvement methods, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action processes.
  • Knowledge of SPC, statistical analysis, process capability, and quality tools is preferred.
  • Ability to support tooling and fixture design; proficiency in AutoCAD is preferred, and SolidWorks experience is an advantage.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional and international teams.
  • Fluent in Vietnamese and English.
  • Must be willing to travel to the United States for technical training.
  • Strong ownership mindset, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.

Preferred Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate does not necessarily need to come directly from optics manufacturing, as this is a specialized field and still developing in Vietnam. Candidates from related high-precision industries are encouraged to apply, including:

  • Precision machining
  • Semiconductor equipment manufacturing
  • Glass, ceramics, or hard-material processing
  • Medical device manufacturing
  • Aerospace or automotive precision manufacturing
  • High-value, low-volume industrial products
  • Precision metrology or test-equipment manufacturing

The most important qualities are a strong engineering foundation, hands-on manufacturing experience, disciplined problem-solving skills, and the ability to learn advanced aspheric lens manufacturing technologies quickly.

Why Join Us

This is a unique opportunity to help build advanced aspheric lens manufacturing capabilities in Vietnam. You will work with state-of-the-art optics manufacturing technologies, support products used in high-growth global markets, and gain exposure to international engineering teams and advanced manufacturing practices.
