Job Description

The role of an Open Source Software (OSS) administrator in the automotive industry involves managing the use, compliance, and integration of open source components within a vehicle's software stack. This position is crucial due to the automotive industry's increasing reliance on OSS for everything from infotainment to autonomous driving systems.

Key Responsibilities

An automotive OSS administrator's responsibilities generally include:

  • Policy and Compliance: Ensuring all open source software used in vehicles and internal systems complies with legal licensing requirements (e.g., GPL, MIT). This involves defining and implementing company-wide policies for OSS usage, contribution, and management.
  • Security Management: Overseeing vulnerability management efforts to identify and mitigate security risks associated with open source components, which is a major concern given the potential for high-profile exploits.
  • Inventory and Tracking: Maintaining a comprehensive and up-to-date inventory of all OSS components used across various vehicle platforms and the supply chain.
  • Supply Chain Management: Collaborating with suppliers and OEMs to ensure the proper management and compliance of OSS throughout the entire automotive supply chain.
  • Process Management: Defining internal processes for how engineers incorporate open source code into development workflows, often involving the use of an Open Source Program Office (OSPO).
  • Community Engagement: Acting as a liaison between the company and external open source communities (e.g., Automotive Grade Linux, Eclipse Foundation, COVESA) to facilitate collaboration and upstream contributions.
