The role
Were hiring a Mechanical/Hardware Engineer to design, build and optimise the physical inspection stations that make Spectron shine: cameras, optics, lighting, fixtures, enclosures, and edge computeengineered for stability, safety and serviceability. Youll collaborate with software/ML, optics and customers to take concepts from CAD prototype production, then support bringup and onsite commissioning.
What youll do
- Design & build optomechanical assemblies: camera mounts, adjustable stages, lighting shrouds/curtains, enclosures, cable management, vibration isolation.
- Integrate cameras (GigE/USB3/CoaXPress), lenses (Cmount/Fmount), and illumination (backlight, dome, ring, coaxial) with strobe/controllers and I/O (TTL/optoisolated).
- Select & size components: sensors, optics, lighting, industrial PCs/GPUs, PSUs, PLCs, connectors (M8/M12), fixtures and safety elementsbalancing throughput, resolution, SNR and cost.
- Prototype & test: rapid jigs/fixtures, bringup, MTF/SNR checks, thermal and stability tests; iterate to hit image quality and takttime targets.
- Calibrate & validate: build calibration jigs (checkerboards/dot plates), run procedures, document SAT/FAT and handover packs.
- Industrialisation: create drawings and GD&T, DFM/DFA packs, BOMs, assembly instructions, service guides; support suppliers and manufacturing.
- Commission & support: assist onsite installs (VN/APAC; occasional EU), troubleshoot mechanical/electrical issues, and tune systems in production.
- Quality & safety: apply good practice (CE mindset), risk assessment (ISO 12100 basics), electrical safety (IEC 602041 awareness), ESD/EMI hygiene.
Youll thrive if you
- Hold a BSc/MSc in Mechanical, Mechatronics or Electrical Engineering.
- Bring 13+ years in machine vision, automation, robotics, or precision mechanisms (exceptional juniors considered).
- Are fluent in CAD (Fusion 360 or SOLIDWORKS) and comfortable with drawings, tolerances & GD&T, and basic FEA where helpful.
- Understand imaging: CMOS/CCD basics, optics/illumination principles, glare/straylight control, and mount rigidity.
- Handle practical electromechanical integration: wiring, power, I/O, enclosures, cooling, thermal and reliability considerations.
- Communicate clearly in English (professional level) and collaborate well across disciplines;
- Work handson: youre comfortable in the lab, on the line, and with a spanner in your hand.
Nice to have
- Experience with 3D vision (laser triangulation/structured light), calibration, or multispectral/hyperspectral.
- Exposure to PLC/industrial comms (Siemens TIA Portal, Modbus/TCP, EtherNet/IP).
- Basic Python/Matlab for test automation and data capture.
- Familiarity with GPUs/edge compute, thermal design, and acoustic/vibration control.
- Robotics (UR/KUKA/FANUC), pneumatics, conveyors, guarding/ergonomics.
Tools & ways of working
- CAD/PDM (Fusion 360 or SOLIDWORKS), basic FEA, Jira/Notion/Confluence.
- Comfortable with AIassisted workflows (e.g., ChatGPT/Gemini) for research, checklists, test plans and documentation.
