Job Summary
The Restraints Systems SME will serve as the technical authority on the design, integration, testing, and compliance of occupant restraint systems, including seat belts, airbags, and child restraint systems. The SME will guide product development teams, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide expertise on crash safety performance, material selection, and systems integration.
- Serve as the go-to technical expert for all matters related to restraints systems across the organization.
- Develop and review technical specifications for occupant restraint systems (e.g., seat belts, airbags, pre-tensioners).
- Support engineering design, validation, and testing of restraint system components and subsystems.
- Interpret and ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations (e.g., FMVSS, ECE R16, ECE R14, NCAP protocols, ISO, SAE standards).
- Lead and participate in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Design Reviews, and Safety Assessments.
- Provide guidance during crash testing, analyze test results, and recommend design improvements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (design, simulation, testing, manufacturing, quality) to develop robust restraint solutions.
- Support supplier selection and evaluation for restraint components, and monitor technical performance.
- Create and deliver training and technical documentation for internal stakeholders.
- Stay abreast of technological advancements, industry trends, and regulatory updates affecting restraint systems.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering , Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field ( Master's preferred).
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in restraint systems engineering, crashworthiness, or occupant safety.
- Deep knowledge of restraint system components (seat belts, airbags, pre-tensioners) and their integration into vehicle or seat structures.
- Strong understanding of bio-mechanics, occupant kinematics, and crash safety standards.
- Experience with CAE tools for crash simulation (e.g., LS-DYNA, MADYMO, PAM-CRASH) is a plus.
- Proven experience with regulatory compliance processes and certification testing.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
Preferred
- Experience with systems engineering (requirements management, traceability).
- Familiarity with child restraint systems (CRS) design and regulation.
- Hands-on experience with physical crash testing and instrumentation (dummies, sensors).
- Six Sigma, DFMEA, PFMEA certification or experience.
- Knowledge of emerging trends in active restraints and smart safety systems (e.g., adaptive airbags, predictive seat belt pretensioners).
