Job overview
The EDS Functional Safety Engineer Lead is responsible for driving all ISO 26262 FuSa activities for VinFast's Electric Drive System (EDS), including traction inverters, e-powertrain controls, and high-voltage components. This role leads the definition, development, analysis, and validation of safety concepts to ensure robust ASIL C/D compliance across next-generation EV platforms. The position requires close collaboration with system, hardware, software, testing, calibration, and manufacturing teams, as well as direct engagement with customers and safety assessors.
Responsibilities:
1. Functional Safety Leadership & Strategy
- Own and drive the ISO 26262 safety lifecycle activities across concept, system, hardware, and software domains for EDS programs from Concept SOP.
- Define FuSa roadmap, safety goals, and safety strategies aligned with VinFast process.
- Ensure safety work products for ISO 26262 Part 27 are complete and traceable to be comliant with ASPICE process
- Establish and maintain Safety Plan, DIA, Safety Case, Safety Verification Plan, safety KPIs.
2. Technical Excellence
- Lead creation of Item Definition, HARA, ASIL classification, and develop FSC, TSC, and define safety requirements for Traction Inverter, HV components, control algorithms, and torque path.
- Lead failure analysis (FMEA, FTA, FMEDA, DFA) and derive technical solutions to meet ASIL C/D requirements.
- Ensure correct implementation of diagnostics, redundancy concepts, monitoring, and safety mechanisms.
- Develop system / subsystem safety architectures for: Traction inverter powerstage and gate driver, Current/voltage sensing and protection circuits, Resolver / position sensor safety, Torque monitoring and torque derating, HVIL & isolation monitoring, Overcurrent, overvoltage, overtemperature protections, Loss-of-phase and short-circuit detection.
- Evaluate HW/SW safety architectures and confirm compliance with safety goals. Support ASIL decomposition strategies for hardware and software functions.
- Collaborate with hardware and software engineers to design and validate safety mechanisms such as: Redundant current sensing, Safe torque monitoring,
- Safe state transitions, PWM shutdown safety strategies, Hardware fault detection for SiC/MOSFET stages.
- Develop Safety Verification and Validation Plan for inverter and eDrive system.
- Drive alignment on safety concepts with internal design teams and external suppliers.
3. Project Management
- Manage safety deliverables, timelines, and cross-functional coordination.
- Ensure alignment with OEM customers on FuSa requirements, DIA, and implementation approach.
4. Assessment & Audit Support
- Serve as the main technical interface for functional safety assessments, customer audits, and internal ASPICE/ISO audits.
- Lead closure of safety-related findings.
5. Talent & Organization Development
- Mentor engineers on FuSa methodology, best practices, and technical solutions.
Requirements
1. Prefer Qualification
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Control Engineering or related field.
- Functional Safety certification required (FS Eng / FS Expert ISO 26262).
2. Experience
- 5:7+ years experience in Functional Safety for automotive systems; Strong experience with ISO 26262 Part 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 work products.
- 3:5+ years specifically in EDS / Inverter / e-Powertrain FuSa.
- Proven experience leading FuSa activities across System, HW, and SW domains for ASIL C/D programs.
- Strong knowledge of ASPICE processes, requirement management, and safety lifecycle.
- Hands-on experience with system architecture for EV drive units and safety concept development.
- Experienced with DFMEA, HARA, FTA, FMEDA, safety case, DIA, and FuSa audits, assessments, confirmation reviews.
- Hands-on experience with HV systems, power electronics, inverter safety mechanisms, torque safety path, thermal protection, sensor plausibility, and diagnostics.
3. Core competencies
- ISO 26262 full-lifecycle management (Concept System HW/SW Production).
- Demonstrated ability to lead Item Definition, HARA, FSC, TSC.
- Knowledge of inverter control concepts, torque safety, safe state strategies.
- Familiar with DFMEA, FMEDA, FTA, safety mechanism design.
- Safety mechanism definition for EDS (inverter shutdown path, HVIL, desaturation detection, torque monitoring, sensor redundancy).
- Safety analysis leadership (HARA, TSC, FSC, FMEDA, FTA, DFA, DFMEA).
- FuSa requirements engineering and traceability management.
- FuSa integration with System, HW, SW, Testing, and Calibration teams.
- Safety validation & verification strategy for high voltage powertrain systems.
- Experience in ASPICE SYS.1SYS.5 and SWE/HWE processes.
4. Skills
- Skilled in analysis tools: Medini, APIS IQ, Ansys FMEDA, FaultTree+.
- Strong understanding of power electronics, inverter architecture, control loops, safety monitoring.
- Ability to derive FuSa requirements from customer SRS & vehicle-level safety goals.
- Skilled in defining HW/SW architectural safety patterns (redundancy, diagnostics, watchdogs, plausibility).
- Experience supporting safety V&V, test case definition, coverage analysis.
- Strong FUSA documentation & audit preparation ability.
- Excellent communication & stakeholder alignment (OEM, assessor, internal teams).
- Leadership mindset, with ability to influence design decisions.
- Ability to manage multiple safety activities in parallel and meet milestone timelines.
5. Certifications (optional)

- ASPICE Provisional Assessor (optional)
- ISTQB Foundation or Advanced Tester (if applicable)
