Founded by Grab, the Tech for Good Institute is a non-profit entity actively shaping the future of technology and society in Southeast Asia. We are hiring a Programme Lead to work closely with the Strategy Director and Executive Director to build the reputation of the Institute for evidence-driven, balanced and policy-relevant work that is best-in-class in terms of originality, significance and rigor.
This role can be situated in Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila or Singapore.
Get to know the Role

  • To develop and execute the research priorities for the Institute, including initiating, leading, and undertaking research programmes with the necessary breadth of vision and leadership skills to deliver on the Institute's mission of raising understanding of issues and informing policy so that the promise of technology and the digital economy may be leveraged to advance inclusive and sustainable growth in SE Asia

  • To steward the Institute's research budget prudently, including working with colleagues to diversify funding sources through grant income and consultancies aligned with the mandate of the Institute

  • To provide leadership to teams, ensuring the quality of programme and research output

  • To fulfil any other duties as may be assigned from time to time for the organisation

In addition to above, the Programme Lead will manage the Sustainability, Technology and Society programme. This includes, but is not restricted to:

  • Conceptualising and planning the programme, including budgeting

  • Developing methodology and frameworks to explore related lines of inquiry

  • Assembling research teams

  • Ensuring that research contributes meaningfully to existing knowledge

  • With the Strategy Director, building awareness and relevance of the Programme among key stakeholders

  • Organising outreach within the community to enable a snowball process of securing interviews and focus groups, including conducting interviews and facilitating focus groups

  • Leading direct field research and data collection

  • Leading the analysis of data and guiding / training colleagues and interns in the development of policy briefs and recommendations

  • Communicating insights and recommendations to stakeholders

  • Capacity pending, there is an opportunity for this role to also lead conversations on conceptualising and building the Data Programme for the Institute. This programme supports the use of data to advance conversations and research in line with the Institute's mission

The Day-to-Day Activities

  • Work with the Executive Director and Strategy Director to develop, execute and improve an institutional view of the Institute research priorities and future opportunities

  • Advise the Executive Director on research strategy and approaches

  • Establish and continually improve a clear and engaging house style for research outputs that is engaging, relevant and compelling to key stakeholders

  • With the Executive Director and Strategy Director, identify new topics that deepen and broaden the Institute's reputation for relevant and timely research, and develop /obtain funding for proposals (including academic, private and public sector funders) supporting policy-relevant research projects that employ a range of social research methods

  • Deploy a proactive approach to keep the Institute relevant: - Manage external relationships with funders and other stakeholders.

  • Build networks for the Institute amongst researchers and research entities

  • Initiate and oversee research, working independently and autonomously on a number of research and policy projects simultaneously, as required

  • Undertake continuous personal and professional development

  • Manage and coach colleagues personally and professionally

The Must-Haves

  • A national or regional profile through publications and/or other measures of peer esteem in an area of research relevant to policies that will shape the trajectory of technology and the digital economy in SE Asia.

  • Doctorate degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience with a background in Law/Political Science/Economics/Anthropology/Sociology/Public Policy
