After all, the way you live your life today will determine the quality of your life tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Swedish singer Darin in his song, <em>Be What You Wanna Be<\/em>, says it all: \u201cDoctor, actor, lawyer or a singer; Why not president, be a dreamer; You can be just the one you wanna be\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">So how do you \u201cbe what you wanna be\u201d and not what others want to see?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\"><strong>#1 Begin by working backward<\/strong><\/span><\/span><strong>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Our growing-up years teach us the importance of linear progression. However, inverting the process often offers unexpected results. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/nextavenue\/2013\/07\/01\/the-surprising-benefits-of-working-backward\/#6a209c119ed4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">article in Forbes<\/a>, Christine Weber, a clinical neuropsychologist in Seaford, N.Y., says reversing the order of one\u2019s approach \u201cforces the brain to think in a different way \u2014 it\u2019s a rewiring and changes the focus\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\"><strong>Try:<\/strong> Decide what success means to you and figure how much you really need to be happy \u2013 money, work hours, vacation time, relationships etc. \u2013 and work towards that.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\"><strong>#2 Don\u2019t go with your gut<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">The traditional advice you get is to \u201cgo with your gut\u201d. But in an article titled <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2003\/05\/dont-trust-your-gut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Don\u2019t Trust Your Gut<\/a> in <em>Harvard Business Review,<\/em> Eric Bonabeau writes that scholars of human cognition \u201chave shown that our thinking is subject to all sorts of biases and flaws, most of which operate at a subconscious level\u2014at the level, in other words, of intuition\u201d. So while your gut works well in certain situations such as when you are in danger, it is poor when it comes to working out things like how you need to pace your career or how fast a business will grow.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\"><strong>Try: <\/strong>Instead of relying on our gut, go investigate the options that seem interesting and the right fit for you. Whittle down your long-term options to a shortlist by working in a systematic manner. Test your new idea without letting it affect your career \u2013 spend a day with a friend who\u2019s doing your dream job, meet up with people in the field, take a relevant online course or consider a part-time engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\"><strong>Try:<\/strong> Taking on a freelance project will help you learn more about whether the new field is the right fit before you switch lanes completely.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\"><strong>#5 Play to your strengths<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif\">Too many of us spend lives trying to work on our weaknesses when we could be mastering our strengths. Every person is born with a set of inherent skills and passions, and relying on them to get ahead is a better idea than focusing on what you are not so good at.
