SIBMT is one of the eight institutions run by the Suryadatta group. As we walk into the campus, we see two buildings, mirror images of each other. Once houses SIMBT and the other, the Suryadatta Institute of Management and Mass Communication. The wi-fi enabled academic complex has classrooms equipped with modern teaching aids, computer labs, a convention hall, a reading hall, an electronic lab, a studio and a library, all with special names. The electronic lab is called Incubation and the computer is called Data Centre and so on. Photographs of prominent personalities and their inspiring quotes adorn the walls of the institute.

“Our institution offers numerous industry-oriented specialisations where the students can explore their interest and talent to take an informed decision,” says Dr. S B Chordiya, Founder President & Chairman. We also interact with Prof. Aslam Jamadar, Director Operations, who briefs us about the institute and the course structure.

The PGDM programme is divided into four semesters and offers sector specialisation. One could choose Retail and FMCG, Telecom and Information Technology and Services and IT Enabled Services. For instance, in the first semester the Retail and FMCG specialisation exposes students to general management concepts and subjects that include HR, marketing, research methodology, statistics etc. The second semester introduces students to subjects like Managing Retailing and Consumer Behaviour and the third and fourth semesters are much more focused with modules like Technology in Retailing, Brand Management, and Employability Enhancement. Each course has a capacity of 60 seats each.

There were very few students on campus as it was the end of the semester, and the holidays were on. The institute seems to have invested more on student welfare and leisure activities than say, learning resources. This is evident from a relatively small library, lack of research centre, minimal consultancy activities of faculty, publication record on one hand and better facilities in aerobics, gymnasium and even a design studio. The area where SIBMT scores over quite a few other B-Schools is the extensive industry interaction. The associated activities for the same include engaging in project work and seminars, regular interaction with mentors from the industry, role playing, industry visits outside the city, and conducting simulation exercises. Management Games is a popular activity as it focuses on business world realities as well as improving the students’ decision making abilities.

The Outdoor Management Training helps students pick up keys skills such as team work, leadership and crisis management in a more natural environment. There are many student initiatives such as event organising, working with NGOs, cultural programmes and engagements like spiritual camp, commando training programme and yoga & meditation to keep you busy.
