THE first industrial school in Orissa was opened in 1884, in Alalpur, Balasore. A survey school began at the same time in Cuttack, which later on became the Orissa School of Engineering, marking the beginnings of technical education in the State. The Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar is the first of the six new Indian Institutes of Technology established by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, in 2008.
Most of the student intake (71%) is in four disciplines: Computer Science (5,865); Electronics & Communications (6,718); Mechanical Engineering (4,040) and Electrical & Electronics Engineering (3,390). Four other disciplines have a fair share of intake: Information Technology (2,500), Electrical (2,346), Civil Engineering (1,170) and Applied Electronics & Instrumentation and Control (1,050 seats).
Gandhi Institute of Engineering & Technology, Gunupur & C.V. Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneswar have more than 500 seats each. 47 colleges have more than 300 engineering seats each at the UG level.

Admission procedure
The government of Orissa conducts a competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) annually to select students for admission into the various engineering colleges.
Eligibility criteria
Pass or appearing in the current year in 10+2 examination of CHSE or equivalent, with Physics and Mathematics along with one of the following subjects: Chemistry/Biotechnology/Computer Science/Biology or Diploma holders including those having less than 60% marks in aggregate from State Council for Technical Education & Vocational Training (SCTE&VT), Orissa or equivalent are eligible for admission to 1st year Engineering/ Technology.
