AIEEE cut-offs for top engineering colleges

WITH nearly a million students vying for about 26,000 engineering seats, AIEEE is a tough nut to crack. Even when you get a rank, selecting the right college/ branch, is invariably a difficult choice. To assist you in your preparation, we have clustered colleges based on their opening and closing ranks, based on the last published rank lists.

The objective is to offer you a fair idea of which college you could opt for, depending on the rank you get. Once you zero in on the probable college, you could look at ranks for preferred branches so that the decision becomes more informed.

It is worthwhile to note that even in the “Open” category, admission to most branches is made under two quotas: All India (AI) & Home State (HS). Without exception, the ranks under the AI category are much higher than those of students admitted in the HS category. Subsequently, the opening rank is always from the AI category and the closing rank from the HS category.
Another interesting fact that crops up here is the “gap” between the opening and closing rank, signifying the breadth of the window available to the students for admission. The following factors would impact the window:

1. The demand of the college: The higher the perceived worth of the college, the greater would be the demand, and consequently, lower would be the breadth of the window. We thought this was all there was to it before we pondered a little more on the data and some other equally convincing reasons popped up.
    
2. Student population: The higher the population of a state, the more the applicants to the engineering seats and consequently, the higher would be the closing rank in the HS category. This, as we mentioned earlier, would directly push up the overall closing rank. Hence, it is safe to presume that states with higher population would have a smaller window and the sparsely populated ones would have a larger window. This is aptly exemplified by IIIT, Hyderabad and IIIT, Allahabad on one end of the spectrum and NIT, Agartala on the other.
    
3. Student/education quality in the state: If some seats can only be filled by students belonging to a particular (home) state and if the general level of education in the state is low as compared to the other states, obviously these students would secure lower ranks in the respective competitive exam. This would inevitably lead to the closing rank, which is based on the rank secured by the Home State students and therefore making the window appear larger.
